The Health Journey

When you decide to walk the path to better health, you're walking the path to feeling stronger and happier. It's an ongoing process of self-discovery and self-improvement, with the ultimate goal of achieving a balanced and fulfilling life. But why is this journey so important for our overall well-being?

Firstly, prioritizing our health allows us to live our lives to the fullest. When we feel strong and energised, we're better equipped to tackle the challenges that come our way, whether they're physical, mental, or emotional. Moreover, investing in our health today can help prevent future illnesses and chronic conditions, ensuring a higher quality of life as we age.

However, the health journey has its challenges. Along the way, many of us encounter common challenges that can hinder our progress and leave us feeling frustrated or discouraged. One of the most prevalent of these challenges is stress. It can have a significant impact on both our physical and mental well-being, causing symptoms such as tension headaches, stiff muscles, and difficulty concentrating.

Another thing that can make the journey tough is feeling anxious. Anxiety can make us feel worried or scared, and it can stop us from doing things we want to do. Feeling tired all the time is also a common problem. This might happen because we're not sleeping well, or we're doing too much.

Speaking of sleep, many people struggle with insomnia or other sleep disorders that disrupt their restorative rest and leave them feeling groggy and lethargic during the day. Without adequate sleep, our bodies are unable to recharge and repair themselves properly, compromising our immune function, cognitive performance, and mood stability.

So, going on a health journey is important for feeling good and living life well. But it's not always easy because things like stress, anxiety, tiredness, and sleep problems can get in our way. Still, by understanding these problems and finding ways to deal with them, we can keep moving forward on our journey to being healthy and happy.

What is Ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha is a small plant with yellow flowers. Its scientific name is Withania somnifera and other common names are “Indian ginseng” and “winter cherry.” It has been used for a long time—like, ancient civilization long.

People in India have been using Ashwagandha’s extracts or powder or leaves to treat a variety of conditions like anxiety and fertility issues for thousands of years as part of their traditional medicine system called Ayurveda (the original holistic health guide).

In Ayurveda, Ashwagandha is considered a powerful herb with all sorts of benefits. It's often called an "adaptogen," which is a fancy way of saying it helps your body adapt to stress. And you know what? Science is starting to back up some of these old beliefs.

Scientists have found that ashwagandha has some really neat properties that can help our bodies and minds feel better. One of the biggest benefits is that it can help reduce stress. It's like a natural stress-reliever that can help us feel calmer and more relaxed, even when things get tough.

But that's not all. Ashwagandha is also good for our immune system, which helps us fight off colds and other sicknesses. And if you've ever had trouble sleeping, ashwagandha might be able to help with that too. Some studies suggest that it can improve the quality of our sleep, so we wake up feeling more rested and ready to take on the day.

The Role of Ashwagandha in Supporting Wellness

When we're stressed, our bodies release hormones like cortisol, which can make us feel even more stressed out. The more stressed we are, the more of these hormones are released, and it becomes a loop. But Ashwagandha can calm these things down.

But how does it do that? Well, scientists think it has to do with something called adaptogens. These are compounds found in certain plants, like ashwagandha, that help our bodies adapt to stress and stay balanced. So, when we take ashwagandha, it's like giving our bodies a little extra support to deal with whatever life throws at us.

But ashwagandha doesn't just stop at reducing stress. It also helps promote relaxation by calming our nervous system. You know that feeling you get after a long, hot bath or a good massage? That's kind of what ashwagandha does for our bodies – it helps us unwind and feel more at ease.

And it doesn't end there. Ashwagandha also has some pretty cool effects on our brains. It can help improve our mood and even boost our cognitive function, so we can think more clearly and focus better on whatever we're doing.

As such, Ashwagandha supports our bodies' natural capacity to cope with stress as well as promote relaxation and improve our mood and cognition.

Scientific Studies That Show Ashwagandha’s Effectiveness

Results from various clinical trials indicate that extracts of ashwagandha may have the potential to alleviate stress and anxiety.

A systematic review conducted in 2021 analyzed seven studies that explored the effects of ashwagandha on stress and anxiety in a total of 491 adults from India. Participants, who either reported high stress and anxiety or had a diagnosed anxiety disorder, were randomly assigned to take ashwagandha or a placebo for 6 to 8 weeks. Different studies used extracts derived from ashwagandha root alone, root and leaf combinations, or unspecified parts, with doses ranging from 240 to 1,250 mg/day of extract or 12,000 mg/day of whole root granules equivalent to 6,000 mg of root powder.

Overall, the findings revealed that ashwagandha significantly reduced levels of stress and anxiety, as measured subjectively by validated rating scales. Additionally, it was associated with reduced sleep disturbances, fatigue, and lower levels of serum cortisol (a stress hormone) compared to the placebo. Notably, some studies suggested that the benefits were more pronounced with doses ranging from 500 to 600 mg/day.

Furthermore, three smaller studies published after the 2021 review also supported the positive effects of ashwagandha on perceived stress. One such trial involved 60 participants experiencing perceived stress in Florida. They were given capsules containing either 225 mg/day or 400 mg/day of a specific ashwagandha root and leaf extract (NooGandha) or a placebo for 30 days. Compared to the placebo group, participants taking both doses of ashwagandha extract reported improvements in stress, anxiety, depression, and food cravings based on validated rating scales. Moreover, those taking the 225 mg dose exhibited lower saliva cortisol levels compared to the placebo group.
